Andy Reid Reveals Playing Time Plans for Starters Against Cardinals

The 2023 training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs has officially concluded at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO. While the team’s focus shifts towards the preseason and finalizing their initial 53-man roster, these efforts will now transition back to Kansas City. Looking ahead to Saturday night, the Chiefs are aiming to secure a victory after their loss in the first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. This time, they face off against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, a rematch of their meeting that opened the 2022 regular season.

Coach Andy Reid has outlined his plan for the playing time of starters in the upcoming second preseason game. Reid stated, “As far as the playing time goes for this coming game, the ones will go for a half and then we’ll mix in the twos and threes in the third quarter.” He acknowledged that in-game situations can lead to adjustments in this plan.

Reid’s previous promises of preseason playing time for his first-string players have sometimes differed from reality. However, he expressed a more concrete plan for this week’s game compared to past occasions. Last year’s second preseason game saw Patrick Mahomes playing for two possessions, a contrast to the plan for this week’s matchup.

After a lackluster performance by the Chiefs’ starters in their previous game, Reid expects improved execution from his first-stringers against the Cardinals. He emphasized the importance of execution and increasing performance from the previous week.

Despite concerns about the condition of the Cardinals’ playing field, Reid is confident that the surface is still suitable for gameplay. He believes that preparing for preseason games is an essential part of the game and helps players adjust to the speed of regular season matches.

As the Chiefs gear up for their second preseason game, Reid maintains that the experience is a valuable step towards getting ready for the regular season. He emphasizes the game’s faster pace compared to practice, providing players with a taste of the challenges they will face.
