“Woodaz: Thomas’ Lightning Speed Strikes Fear into the Heart of Quarterbacks”

After Clemson’s practice, sophomore linebacker Wade Woodaz faced the media and offered insights into the anticipated shifts in the Tigers’ defense this season, now in its second year under defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin.

Woodaz emphasized the team’s increased depth and remarkable defensive flexibility as key elements this year. He highlighted the explosiveness of edge rusher Xavier Thomas, underscoring the athleticism prevalent across the defense.

Pointing out the dynamic lineup, Woodaz commented, “Xavier Thomas at D-end, that dude can freakin’ fly. Mukuba has been locked in this camp. And then us three linebackers – Woodaz, Barrett Carter, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. – we complement each other perfectly. Young talents in the secondary have also caught our attention. With this level of talent, we believe we can compete against any opponent.”

Woodaz was prompted to elaborate on Thomas’ speed and its impact on Clemson’s pass rush. He revealed, “It’s a game-changer. With Xavier’s ability, we can rotate players and even have him play a linebacker-like role. Quarterbacks have reason to fear his quickness; he can be right there in the blink of an eye.”

Thomas, a former five-star prospect from Florence, S.C., and a recurring All-ACC selection, faced limitations last season due to a foot injury, playing in just three games. Nonetheless, he managed to make an impact with four tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in limited snaps.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 245 pounds, the graduate senior is now in his sixth season at Clemson. Throughout his career, he’s accumulated an impressive record of 116 tackles (30.0 for loss), 14.5 sacks, five pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery across 49 games. Thomas’ prowess on the field has made him a standout force within Clemson’s defense since 2018.
