Miley Cyrus explains the real meaning of ‘Flowers’… and it’s not what you think it is

The singer opens up in an interview to Vogue magazine

The undeniable success of Miley Cyrus’ song ‘Flowers’ is a testament to its impact. The singer penned this track in the aftermath of her breakup with actor Liam Hemsworth, using its lyrics to advocate for female empowerment and independence during such moments. However, Cyrus revealed to Vogue magazine that her original intent while writing the song was quite different.

In her conversation with the aforementioned publication, Cyrus explained, “I initially wrote it from a different perspective. The chorus originally went like this: ‘I can buy me flowers, I can write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me any better than you do.’ The final version, which has become a massive international hit, took on a different meaning.”

The song ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus has undoubtedly achieved remarkable success. It was born out of her breakup with actor Liam Hemsworth, delivering a powerful message of female empowerment and independence in such circumstances. Cyrus candidly shared with Vogue magazine that her original intention while composing the song was quite different.

In the initial composition, the lyrics went like this: “I can buy me flowers, I can write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me any better than you do.” However, the final version of the song takes a different direction: “I can buy myself flowers, I can write my name in the sand, I can talk to me for hours and say things you can’t understand, I can take me dancing and I can hold hands. Yes, I can love me better than you can.”

Cyrus explained that her initial vision for ‘Flowers’ had a more “1950s” style and carried a somber tone. She said, “It was the saddest song. Yes, I can be my own mistress, but you’re so much better. The final version is a bit of faking it until you make it, which I’m a big fan of,” the American singer confessed.

In the interview, Cyrus naturally discussed her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, emphasizing that she wouldn’t erase her past and finds value in sharing her interesting life experiences through her art.

Cyrus has matured and gained significant life experience over the years, acknowledging her past wild and fun-loving persona. As for ‘Flowers,’ the song has amassed a remarkable 437 million views on YouTube alone, solidifying its undeniable success and propelling her to the top of the Billboard chart a decade after its release.
