We all seek valuable advice from time to time, and many of us find solace in our grandparents when navigating life’s challenges. In this widely circulated parable found on the internet, a grandmother imparts simple yet profound wisdom to her granddaughter.
Although the author of this piece remains unknown, the timeless wisdom it conveys resonates universally and is worthy of appreciation by all.
The story begins with a young woman visiting her grandmother, overwhelmed by the hardships in her life and in need of guidance. In response, her grandmother presents a carrot, eggs, and coffee…
“A young woman approached her grandmother, sharing her life’s struggles and expressing how tough things had become. She felt overwhelmed and on the brink of giving up. The constant battles and never-ending problems left her feeling exhausted. It seemed that as soon as one issue was resolved, another arose.
The grandmother led her to the kitchen, where she filled three pots with water and placed them on high heat. Soon, the water in all three pots began to boil. In the first pot, she added carrots; in the second, eggs; and in the third, ground coffee beans. She allowed them to simmer without uttering a word.”
“After about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. Carefully, she removed the carrots and placed them in a bowl. Next, she retrieved the eggs and put them in another bowl. Finally, she ladled the coffee into a bowl.
Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, ‘Tell me, what do you see?’ The granddaughter replied, ‘I see carrots, eggs, and coffee.'”
“The grandmother drew her closer and encouraged her to touch the carrots. She did so and noticed their softness. Then, she asked her to take an egg and crack it open. After peeling the shell, she found a hard-boiled egg inside. Finally, she invited her to taste the coffee. The granddaughter smiled as she savored its rich aroma.
Curious, the granddaughter inquired, ‘What does this mean, Grandmother?’ Her grandmother proceeded to explain that all these objects had faced the same challenge—boiling water. Yet, each had reacted differently.
The carrot had entered the water strong and unyielding but had softened and weakened in the face of adversity.
The egg had initially been fragile, with its thin outer shell protecting its liquid core. However, after enduring the boiling water, its interior had become hardened.”
“The coffee beans, on the other hand, had demonstrated uniqueness. They had transformed the hot water, altering the very circumstance that caused pain. ‘Which one are you?’ her grandmother asked the granddaughter. ‘When adversity knocks at your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?'”
“Consider this: Who am I? Am I the carrot that, while appearing strong, becomes soft and loses strength when faced with pain and adversity?
Am I like the egg, initially possessing a tender heart but hardening under the heat? Did I once have a fluid spirit that turned bitter and unyielding after experiencing loss, heartbreak, financial hardship, or some other trial? Does my exterior appear unchanged, while my interior is embittered and unyielding?”
“Or am I akin to the coffee bean? The bean actively changes the hot water, releasing its fragrance and flavor. If you are like the coffee bean, when things are at their worst, you not only endure but also influence and improve the situation. When times are darkest and trials most severe, do you rise to a higher level?”
This story prompts introspection about our responses when confronting challenges. Are we like carrots, eggs, or coffee beans?
