Chico’s initial years were marked by solitude. A pit bull adopted by a rural family in North Carolina more than a decade ago, Chico spent his days confined to a small, cluttered yard without any companionship.
Gricel Guerrero, a concerned neighbor, noticed the distressing conditions Chico lived in and attempted to discuss the dog’s neglect with the family. Despite her efforts to highlight Chico’s need for proper care and attention, the family insisted he was fine and deemed him too aggressive to interact with other dogs, justifying his chaining.
Each time Guerrero saw Chico abandoned in those dire circumstances, her heart ached, but she felt helpless. Eventually, she reached a breaking point and decided to take action. Guerrero contacted various rescue organizations to seek help for Chico’s rescue. After facing challenges, Diva’s Safe Haven & Thrift finally agreed to take Chico in. With a potential new home in sight, Guerrero persuaded the family to relinquish Chico. They agreed, and the rescue collected him on the same day.
Thanks to Guerrero’s persistence, Chico is now receiving the essential medical care he desperately needs. The dog is mostly deaf and has been diagnosed with tumors and arthritis in his back legs. Despite his challenges, Chico’s days at Diva’s are filled with new friends and playtime with the staff.
This transition is one that Chico has embraced wholeheartedly. The staff at Diva’s Safe Haven appreciates his presence and attests that even after years of neglect, Chico remains a gentle and affable companion.
